If you just like someone and something happens (such as a physical accident), it doesn't break your heart, though it may be hard. (Had this happen) Yet if you love someone and even the smallest negative thing happens, you heart rends itself in twain (this happened too). It is not necessarily that you become weak through love, but that real love makes you vulnerable to being hurt. I think a large part of the definition of love is caring for the other more than you do for yourself. With that in mind, the one in love is far more sensitive to the one he loves than anyone else (quite possibly even more sensitive to the beloved than the beloved is to herself). So the reason you must have your heart broken is not for the breaking's sake, but rather that there is the possibility of it doing so. That, at least, is what I have found, having experienced both.
